Merc being able to not run boat anchor rear wings anymore on circuits like this is pivotal.

Pretty impressive comeback considering they didn’t have much of a chance to dial in the upgrades,
Is it due to the soft tyre is the C3 compound - in the middle of the tyre range - or just the Silverstone's high-speed corners that allowed them not to do a second time for warming up the softs? with the little help of the upgrades, of course, :D ...

Well, so much for the "Red Bull has a dominant car" ramblings :D

HAM cracked on his final Q3 run and still Max couldnt beat the Merc today. Perrez only 5th.
Well luckily his clean run was better than Max's clean run. Max cracked on his first run in the same part of the lap.
Taking pole for Lewis means he didn't crack really.
You're in alternate reality mate. Hamilton blew half a second in final corner, Verstappen did like 0.1s. It can't possibly be compared. Hamilton should be on pole by 4 tenths minimum but his car carried him to pole this time. Mistake on second lap cant be just brushed aside.
It can when your on pole.

Needs 5 tenths advantage to be on pole. Weak. Even his Q2 lap was faster than his eventual "pole" lap. So much for maximising the car.

Would it be possible to splice the end of his fastest Q2 lap or his first one in Q3 with the second Q3 run in order to determine what the possible pole time could have been? Would be more useful than shitting up various places of the forum going on about how bad of a driver he is tbh

It would appear that the change in conditions (or last second setup changes?) changed the balance of Max' car because he did not have any visible understeering issue in FP1, the RBR looked really hooked up there and apparently lost the front end bite during the quali sessions - so that paired with an obviously improved Merc (not having to run a barn door RW alone is worth a lot of laptime) lead to this result in Q.

How much would the later qualy time affect the pecking order for when we go back to the normal race week schedule? Just wondering if the later time played in Merc hands or the upgrade has given new life into the championship battle.

As RZS10 points out above, the most obvious sign that the upgrades have helped is the Mercedes rear wing/downforce choice for the weekend.

It’s a massive change compared to what they were running in Austria, or even France with the long Mistral straight that just killed them before.

It will take a few more sessions for Merc to fully understand these upgrades and extract their potential.

Can you stop already? Good grief just swallow your bitterness instead of spreading it around at every opportunity.

Also, Lewis was up by just over 2 tenths after S2. Why was he automagically going to gain another 3 tenths in S3?

Now Hamilton's car in particular from highly unscientifical eye calculation seems to be very low downforce, would this hurt their ability to keep the tires in their window?
I think you will find that they are sealing the floor better now, and thus getting more "clean" DF , thus they don't need as much "dirty" DF from the rear wing.

Interesting question that I haven't seen claried anywhere. Is this Hamilton's 101st pole, or does he only get that if he wins the sprint Race tomorrow?

HAM was on a 25.8-25.9 at best; no way did he blow half a second. It would have been 3 tenths gap at best.

Pole is determined tomorrow sadly; winner of the sprint race.

Changes to qualifying

The fastest driver in qualifying will not get the official pole position to his name this weekend. That will go to the winner of the sprint race on Saturday.

The gap was what, 0.075s with only 1FP session to prepare the car. This session doesn't really say much about how the season will play out at all.

They both cracked, clearly Hamilton had the dominant car that was more to his liking than Max.

Red Bull will be ab to reverse the changes to Max's car when the cars are released from Parc Ferme tomorrow as long as it falls into the allowed changes.
How does Parc Ferme work?
Rules forbid the changing of major components in Parc Ferme to avoid teams moving to create special ‘qualifying cars’ while also limiting the number of hours required for preparing the car for the following day.

However, some wriggle room on car reconfiguration is permitted to make Saturday’s FP2 session more useful.

For safety reasons, teams can change brake friction material for a new, identical set that was used in qualifying and F1 Sprint ahead of the Grand Prix. Brake ducts can be changed, too.

Allowances have been made for power unit and gearbox cooling adjustments should the ambient temperature change significantly (a change of 10C or more recorded by the FIA’s appointed weather service provider) while weight distribution may be altered.

Should a front wing be damaged in F1 Sprint, for example, and the team has run out of latest specification front wings, they can run a previously used specification without penalty. Previously a change of specification, either for a new or older component, would have triggered a penalty.

Between qualifying and F1 Sprint, teams are permitted to change or adjust suspension elements – springs and dampers – or alter camber, toe or ride height of suspension components defined in Article 10.3 of the Technical Regulations.
Mercedes may be able to tweak their settings to optimize their new updates too.
