Changing engine maps between qualifying and the race is now banned for valencia. This should spice up the action a fair amount. My bet for qualifying changes from 1. Vettel 2. Alonso to 1. Alonso 2. Hamilton.

and the Fun police strike again!! ever since the FIA started banning interesting tech with lame interpretations of the rules (eg Renault TMD = active Aero!!) F1 has been in a constant race to the bottom of the Hi Tech pile!

This is the part of F1 that displeases me. As much as I would like to see the title races tighten up. It makes me cringe every time they make a major rule change/re-evaluation. (and constantly doing it doesn’t make it right BTW.)
Equitable sports don't make rule changes that are likely to affect the results of a given season. They live with them and change them on them in-between seasons, or at least they should IMO

According to Scarbs @ Twitter things doesn't really change at all...

You need to use the same mapping during Q and for the first laps in race. So you (Red Bull) can run their extreme engine mapping though.

According to the article (if anyone cares to read it)
The new directive from the FIA means that any engine mapping setting used in qualifying has to now be used for the start of the race – with the first opportunity to change it now only possible at the first pitstop when a computer could in theory be plugged into the car.

So they are effectively banned in the form they are in now unless you plan on pitting on your second or third lap due to the risk of destroying you engine with quali map!

I understood they had lots of different maps in the ECU. During the race we hear drivers being told to change settings - I assumed that was switch to a different map. Usually when the pits see that they will run out of fuel before the end of the race.

What's to stop Red Bull have a special qualifying map that they only use for qualifying & for a desperate overtaking lap?

I don't mind the rules being changed but I feel it is very unfair to do it during the season. Whoever thinks of a clever trick should have it for the whole season & the others have to try & catch up. That's what was done with the f-duct.

Why would one need to pit? Afaik drivers still have the option to select engine maps through their steering wheel...

That is a very good question. I can understand them wanting to penalize the teams that are going to change this map. As you read in the article it said the computer has to be plugged in. If this is not true than they should just give the car a 5 or 10 second stop, and go. The only thing I can think of is that the data will be transmitted to race control so that there is no doubt about which map they are using (or not using) and it may be necessary to delete the map for the entirety of the race, for whatever that is worth.

Mods can we merge this with the thread in genera chat specifically for this subject? …Thanks

The autosport article claims that to change the engine mapping they need to connect a computer to the car. Pretty sure that what they're adjusting from the cockpit is the fuel/air mix.

I believe it's the case that the teams will only get one set of maps over the weekend. See this post.
