Looking back, Vettel is actually quite fast around here. In 2008 Q2 (which was a better show of out and out pace rather than Q3) Vettel was fastest, and that was the track's fastest ever lap record until Glock stole it, IIRC.

Webber was also insanely fast during Qually and the race last year until Kovi thought he could try racing Webber and sent him flying thru the air.

He was 1/10th slower than vettel in qually and there was a bigger margin back to 3rd place.

I wouldn't call 2nd to 7th in 2 corners and then stuck "insanely fast".

RBR are gonna overfuel then run their qually map for the first stint.

I wonder actually. If they do that, logic would suggest that their qually form would translate throughout their first stint.

Sauce?

It's not just the amount of fuel you're carrying that's the issue (though that will ruin tyres as well as making them generally slower).

It's the amount of engine wear.

The idea isn't such a bad one.

Let's say quali mapping is 100% and race mapping is 50%. Now, if they would run 75% in quali they will be still on pole (assuming the others are not running 100%) and they are able to create a good gap on the first stint. I don't know how long it takes to plug the notebook but however, it might work.

They will need the fuel believe me. It's just enough extra fuel to burn off for 20 laps or whatever the first stint is predicted at. After that 20 second gap to every body else you just turn down the engine in the pits, put on new slicks and you are good to go.

Pah.. Engine wear is overrated. Can't tell the last time I saw an engine blow sky high in F1.. mostly just niggling oiling issues not related the combustion chamber, like Vettels oil problem in Korea.

If RB is not worried about engine wear why would they not just use the map during the races even if it was only for a couple of laps? I'm not a wrench and openly admit that the engine retardation, (or is it advance :?: ) is a mystery as to the exact reason it is so hard on the engine. Do you think that they have used it during a race? Plus the extra fuel at the start of the race would stress the engine even more. This is nothing to be concerned about? Just curious.

I think they can only change maps after stopping the car.. or something like that.. I don't know if somebody can verify that?

I don't mean throttling down via adjustment knob, or rpm limiting.. I mean full on map switch.. anybody?

Interesting Hamilton says the engines will not last if you run in qually mode the whole race... Very interesting.. what I want to know is what is the limit? 1 lap? 3 laps? 20 laps?

"We have had the same mode for a while now and everyone will probably not be using their qualifying modes because their engines would not last.

"They will use their race mode - and we generally have good race pace so I am hoping that it enables us to be a bit closer in qualifying. Fingers crossed it works for this race."

Were it beneficial to the overall race pace then they would have done this already. As they have not you can only conclude that this will either hurt their quali pace or hurt their race pace and / or reliability. Unless there is a loophole in the FIAs regs, which is more than likely, then It will be one or the other.
