He's being as diplomatic as possible.

Ultimately it comes down to Ferrari. Build the car and he'll stay. They once lost Alonso quite amicably because they couldn't give him the car.

Indeed. Time to talk is over. Either the next year car (and the Team overall) is good enough, or he will leave, which would be absolutely terrible for Ferrari.

So we are approaching the Last Dance.

Time to temper expectations I guess. From today's interview seems like Charles has already given up hopes for anything magical at Baku. All the talk of work at Maranello, optimizing setups is a big smoke screen it seems.

No need to temper expectations because there were none, atleast for Baku there weren't. We knew some time ago that Baku would have no significant changes outside of track specific updates.

"...optimizing setups is a big smoke screen it seems." What do you want them to say, that is probably exactly what they were doing in the sim. Nobody is expecting them to get on terms with Red Bull by only 'optimizing setups'. To me it seems you've misinterpreted words somewhere down the line.

Not RB, but at least on par or slightly ahead of AMR and Mercedes. No ?

Race pace numbers for Albert Park.

I believe us to be on terms with those teams (excl RB) based off the most recent evidence. This weekend will have way more variables so making a conclusion on the pecking is not realistic as of yet

The current developement pipeline for the SF-23 only comes together at the Spanish GP. If were are still behind AMR and MB then, then you can call it smoke screens.

Expectation is Ferrari will be close to pole or on pole. I even expect good race pace. Charles has always been good around Baku. Expectation is also for it to be an outlier but Ferrari is the number 2 car in general regardless of results so far.

Don't forget that at the previous rear-limited circuit this season, Ferrari was also able to be on pole. It's not super surprising

Let's see in race trim if Ferrari is at least the second-best car.

Why makes you think that? I think they looked quite good on practice. Unless I'm missing some sarcasm.

well from FP1 Ferrari didn't look half bad actually, good speed on straight and decent under traction.
