Mercedes W11 Speculation Thread

A place to discuss the characteristics of the cars in Formula One, both current as well as historical. Laptimes, driver worshipping and team chatter do not belong here.

Taking 3 cars to Barcelona? They had a "B-spec" car with all the complicated bits on it last year. Are they bringing a C-spec? Only two sets of 3-day testing this year. Should be interesting to see how testing goes.

I don't think this drawing has anything to do with the W11, speculation or otherwise.

Literally nothing he says in any tweet links this to the W11. I don't know where @F1Krof deduced that from.
I'm guessing from the Cape, although it could also be the McLaren it seems to me...
This is just a random, fun drawing by Scarbs of a random F1 car. I have no idea why F1Krof associated this with Mercedes or the W11.

It's not only misleading in this thread, but a misrepresentation of Scarbs' tweet, which mentions nothing about the Mercedes W11.

Here is the entire tweet thread. It was a reply to someone randomly complimenting Scarbs' on his drawings.

Has zero to do with the W11.

As I said, presumably because the sketch has a cape under the nose. Which looks like a Merc or a McLaren.

But as you say, there is no indication from Scarbs that it is a specific car.

It also doesn’t have Merc’s airbox, and it has the Red Bull vacuum cleaner nose.

It’s a clear Frankencar. Or, at least it was to me.

Edit: To clarify, I 100% agree with your cape observation - that’s the Merc cape. Paired with all sorts of design cues from other competitors.

To some actual W11 speculation: I think the Merc PU is going to be back at the top this year.

But to the surprise of everyone Mercedes F1 Engineers have said that there would be two to three prominent innovations in 2020 car. It is also being said that the innovations would be like never seen before. It is still unknown whether the team would start with just a test car and bring the 2020 aero package only in the second week.

Don't know how credible that is, but sounds interesting

Mercedes, Racing Point, Williams

3 Merc powered cars, not 3 cars made by mercedes.

Supposedly, that information first came from AMuS.

Here is some more.

Before everybody knew what Ferrari was doing I bet Mercedes invested huge money in their engine for this season. As far as they were concerned they had to legitimately gain 40 bhp or something in order to close the engine gap.

So the 2020 engine is probably heavily improved (more so than in recent years). But at the same time, Ferrari has had its advantage in the engine department taken away from them. This means a net double engine improvement for Mercedes in the coming season.

I think this is being underestimated by a lot of people.

One problem Mercedes had last season was cooling and in multiple races, they had to run reduced power. This will be improved on the new car unquestionably.

Hand on heart I believe 2020 will be complete domination by the W11, something like we saw at the start of this hybrid era.

Do you have the link to that article? I couldn't find any on AMuS. That twitter account only posted a link to the main homepage of AMuS.
Seems like the information originally came from "essentiallysports.com".

I had the same issue. Sometimes what she quotes comes from interviews with Michael Schmidt or the “AMuS Live Ticker.”

I think it may be a case of the latter, which is why the home page is linked.

Finally, I believe Essentially Sports took the information from the tweets, as opposed to the other way around. Regardless, it’s all speculation, which is why I put it in the speculation thread.

If it indeed came from the AMuS ticker, then that’s usually a good source of info. They’re not perfect, but they’re pretty reliable and accountable when they do gaff.
