What those three teams have in common is being consistent failures in providing a great car for their drivers, it's not his fault. If Lewis had stayed for McHonda (which is a realistic possibility) I'd bet money he wouldn't have lasted for the whole 2015 season driving for a backmarker car who broke down every race, both slow and unreliable, let alone 4 years in the team working very hard despite the adversities and lack of power while you are forced to watch your old rivals win. Pretty good strategy today. Honestly I can't remember the last strategy decision they made that went bad?
Monaco wasn't that long ago. Miami in quali. Even today, Alonso was 1 sec behind Norris, closing in. Norris pitted and for some reason AM waited 2 more laps to pit Alonso. Gap became 8-9 seconds.
They didn't lose positions in Monaco, it didn't change the outcome and TBH it was a tough call.

I don't remember what happened in quali in Miami.

Today, when they came out after the pit stop, they were still 5 seconds behind. It wasn't a stregy issue anyways. The pit crew wasn't ready. If anything they could have used that lap to NOT double stack Stroll
The double stacking screwed Stroll's race.

If anything, I feel the engineer is asking Alonso to do to much lift a coast during the race. They find themselves too far behind to catch up in the final stint.

What hurt Alonso today:
1- Car balance on 1st stint, Hards+high fuel was bad(oversteer in some corners, understeer in others). Although, it got less pronounced on the Med, you have to believe it was still there, gutting pace.
2- Early safety car on hards, you always want to go long on hards. They would have liked to have gone another 5-10 laps on hards in that first stint. Would have had much more pace on the last 2 med stints.

IMO That was uncharacteristic double team mistake on the VSC period. They should have pitted Stroll the first time he got by the pit entry while in VSC and they should have left Alonso out.
Instead they pitted both the second time they came by. What i am saying has nothing to do with hindsight. I was literally "WTF they are doing" when both cars passed the pit entry while on VSC. It was obvious that at least for Stroll he had to 100% pit immediately and not a lap l8r. As for Alonso is debatable but IMO he would be better of staying out doing at least another 10 laps on the hard, and then have 2 faster and shorter stints on the mediums.
That's my opinion. The VSC timing wasn't perfect for Alonso, but again, kind of inexcusable from AMR what they did. They heavily compromised Strolls race, and Semi-heavily compromised Alonso's race. Stroll was hurt the most. Overall not the best day for AMRs strategists.

Awful race, the virtual screwed Alonso and I don't think they made the right calls from the pit wall. 3 more races this month I hope they are not like this one.

I also support Alonso, yes... But..
When you have the luxury of running 2 cars on lets say split/flexible strategies from the start, there is no excuse.
Stroll had to pit the first time he came by the pit entry under VSC. That's a fact. I was like WTF they are doing.
If Alonso had to also pit or not is another story, but for me, being on hards, and running the whole stint in clear air controlling his pace, i am pretty sure his tires could easily do another 10 laps posting competitive times. That would allow him faster and shorter medium stints right after. IMO they should have kept him out. It was a VSC and not a SC. If it was a SC that would be a different story.
Regardless pitting both cars one lap l8r, was inexcusable. They should apologize to the Drivers, especially to Stroll.

You're right on that, I agree it wasn't optimal. Just that I think the result would've been similar anyways due to the pace of the car here in Austria, if you don't have the pace then any strategy will not work as hoped. Regardless I want to emphasize that we gained points over Merc this weekend so it's not terrible, performance most likely will swing each circuit because all the cars (except RedBull) are very close in this formula.

On my commentary it claimed that Bottas was unlapping himself, but it certainly did cost Alonso a chunk of time (and was not without risk). Deserved at least investigation

So when Fernando and the engineer where talking before the 2nd pit stop. Alonso asked what the strategy was. The answer was "it is still plan A - 5 laps". That tells me they wanted atleast another 5 laps on the hards. I say "atleast" cause I'm sure they had to run more laps on the first set of med than they had planned.

Alonso:

Well you always expect a bit more, especially with this year's streak of podiums so you always have the hope of being faster in the race but we didn't go very well the whole weekend, during the race we maintained the same level of pace. We have to understand why, last year in Austria Aston Martin was the 10th team I think, this year we suffered again, Haas was quick in Austria last year starting 6th and 7th and this year it's the same so patters sometimes are repeated year on year, we'll have to understand so next year we won't be slow here again.
In the end we got a little bit closer to Mercedes adding both the Sprint and today, we lost points with Ferrari who have taken a step forward, but it's what it is and each weekend there will be ups and downs for everyone, it was our turn this time but we have a chance for revenge next week.
