I was reading somewhere and people were questioning the tire rules...."you must use both compounds".

What is the definition of "USE"? Is it One FULL lap, or one half lap, or 10 meters, etc?

Can Alonso start from the back of the grid, do the formation lap, and then before the green light pit and wait till the green light to change tires and then take off? Is that "USING" both tire compounds?

I think i know where you going with this:

switch the sets, then let the car move a little then changing them again to the good tire.

I assume the regulations mean the tyres must be used for a race lap.

Can a driver use a combination of soft and hard tires at the front/rear and then vice versa?

He has the choice of starting on either 'stones
That's a thought provoking strategy Nacho. My guess is he will start on the option,
If we don't have a safety car Fred will have to thread through the Quasi/teams while trying to not thrash his soft’s, the only reason being that after 18-20 laps the field have thinned out. It would be help for him if there are a couple events that bring out the Safety car. He will be able to pass one rear-ender per lap.
That still leaves him in p17 He also may have The chance of taking a two stop strategy as he has 2 new sets of option tyres for the race. I predict that a safety car gives him an opportunity to finish between 11 and sixth only if major carnage afflict's both RB's and Button. Mike, kube NR, Bulk, and "The Boss" all finish a head of Those three cars, or retire.
He has two chances of finishing as high as sixth,
none, and miniscule.

Ferrari was using different compounds on the left/right side in the past. I was truly amazed with that :D

I would expect that Alonso has gone with a setup that is optimized towards the rain, with his only hope being that in the rain with the right setup he could get into the points.

I am assuming the formation lap doesnt count as "during the race".

Maybe he can pit-stop on lap 1, then hope and pray for a safety car, pass a few Back markers with luck he might end up in the points.

I think the best option is to start on the soft compound do 1 lap at the back pit and change to hard see what happens

Could you clarify? You saw the tyre wobbling? :S
The green paint on the inside of the front right is not straight. Checked it out a few times on the replay. If you look at Vetel's car it is the same.

Webber was seen looking at his right front carefully when he got out of the car. He said in interview that he brushed the armco hard on his second last lap, before doing the 13.8 pole.
Incidently the second last lap he did a 14.1, good enough for pole despite brushing the armco.

To all the Webbo doubters, I hope you are enjoying your humble pie!

Vettel will not dominate him this year like he did last year while Webbo was recovering from serious injury, it's now 3 all for qually and I predict webber and vettel to be pretty even at the end of the season.

Does that count as using both compounds hence the driver no longer needs to pit? Looks like an F2007 to me...

But Alonso isn't allowed to go on the formation lap though. He starts in the pit lane and can only go out when the light goes green
