Mclaren Mercedes MP4-25

A place to discuss the characteristics of the cars in Formula One, both current as well as historical. Laptimes, driver worshipping and team chatter do not belong here.

Wow, yeah maybe Macca finally know how much downforce to run with this MP25! Certainly think they was too cautious in the opening few races of the season with it

The actual speed traps for Montreal are: Petrov and Kubica @ 324kph, Alguersuari and DiGrassi @ 323kph, and Button @ 320 kph.

Those are still available in the f1.com live timing application. Look for it in the weather and speed tab.

Well spotted - thanks.

They were only 5kph behind 325kph. Surprising to see RB down at 312 kph

The real numbers are below, and can be downloaded from this link ...

If you run that much wing compared to the other cars and can stay within 4-5kph of the front runners then the F-duct is working minor miracles at the back of the car.
However, with no real corners the extra DF was only useful for braking and trackion at the last race. Valencia requires slightly more DF than Canada and so it should suit the 25 even more than Canada did.

Monza with less DF than Canada will allow them to run a similar wing, but again the benefits may only be seen in braking and traction zones.

The downforce was useful as well to give the tyres a little more life, at least enough to equal ferrari in how it treats the tyres.
It also helps in braking.

I imagine at Monza a larger wing will help through the Lesmo's, ascari and parabolica. More importantly, good luck to anyone trying to follow that Mclaren through parabolica ;-)!

However, I suspect because of the unique demands of Monza, Mclaren will go for a much much more shallow wing.

Ferrari ran alot of wing here at Canada too it seemed!

I disagree. Being able to run more wing than the others without straightline speed penalty will allow them to be a few mph faster in the Lesmo corners and the Parabolica. Both of these corners lead on to straights that end in chicanes (particularly the latter) which will mean decent overtaking chances at least twice a lap. The Variante Ascari may be taken quicker too which will also help in the run down to Parabolica.

I think that Monza, along with Spa, will be circuits at which a car without an f-duct will be easy pickings for those with an f-duct. The run down to Les Combes, for example, will pay real dividends. I wonder if Blanchimont might be taken with the duct operating too - there should be sufficient residual d/f for the corner. If this is the case then the f-duct cars will be mighty heading in to the Bus Stop.

Sadly for McLaren, the main title contenders will certainly have versions of the duct by then so the MP4-25's advantage will be minimised. Their real hope is that their version is the best and gives them even an mph or two advantage.

It's still only 3 corners for the whole track, and the second Lesmo isn't taken at high speed. At Parabolica they will have an advantage, and I would imagine in the same way they pick a braking point, they will have to pick an F-duct point during corner.

Traditionally this is the lowest DF track of the calendar, the F-duct will help, but the time will come in the same manner as Monaco - more DF give better traction/braking in and out of the chicanes.

That means their F-duct is incredibly powerful: McLaren didn't brought a specific low downforce wings to Montreal; they used the Istanbul spec (wich generates a far greater amount of DF) ! and despite that, they had a competitive Top speed...
However, with no real corners the extra DF was only useful for braking and trackion at the last race.
And make the tires last longuer thanks, like ringo said...

and in some turns; Monza also likes cars that naturally generate a good level of downforce, like just a fan said

the mclaren's ass looks a little fat compared to the ferrari, mercedes and sauber..
and that sauber has almost the same rear end lines and some details like the ferrari... nice photos for comparison!

Then you are looking wrong as the mclaren is the car with the tightest sidepod packaging, the only fat ass on the grid is the ferrari.
