Probably a much less harmful proposition than taking the wheel straight to the face at a closing speed of 250 MPH.

The forward roll hoop idea is damned stupid for the simple reason of it being considered an idea. This is how the crash structure in a closed cockpit car works and why F1 didn't go to at least a semi-closed design years ago on safety grounds is beyond me.

Its worth testing, but its a poor idea partly because it won't stop small things, like the spring that nearly killed Massa.

How could it rebound back and hit the driver with this big stupid cage over the driver's head? It would have to disintegrate first and then I wouldn't suspect the smaller pieces would have much KE.

EDIT: I thought that this cage would be adapted to fit over the head of the driver, is that not the case?

I think the cars would look great with a Red Bull X2010 style canopy or an F-16 canopy. This cage will never be used as it doesn't protect the driver from small debris like 180mph 1kg suspension springs.
