They have no problem messing around with the formats on a weekly basis, but it seemingly takes years to decide how to make qualifying more fair…
If everything was perfectly fair, it would be worse for the show. Controversy/unexpected results drive more interest/discussion and promotion of the sport than anything else with the way social media is now, IMO.
I don't think that's true. The first half of 2021 and the first half of 2022 where we just had pure racing between Ham/Ver and Ver/Leclerc in cars that were close enough, didn't require any gimmicks, or lack of fairness to make the show great.
Call me weird but I don't think it would be fair at all to allow people to have another lap or penalize whoever crashed (intent aside) during qualifying but not during the race. Should Latifi have been penalized for his crash in AD? Should we penalize further whoever crashes nullifying a big gap? What about when the car breaks itself like Ocon's in Silverstone 2022 that caused LEC to lose a race he had all but won?
And if crashes are too much, what about the issue of SC coming out and you get to gain time and positions on others because it happens when you are close to the pit entry rather than just past it?
Nah... people crash, it's remarkably rare and if someone does it maliciously they should be disqualified from the race. Set a fast first lap so that's not a big problem.
