Two DRS zones in Abu Dhabi.

This is probably the best combination of DRS zones of the whole season.

I'm just afraid we might see "abuse" of the two zones when 1 driver uses zone 1 to come very close and zone 2 to go by rather than overtake in zone 1 and get reovertaken in zone 2....

It seems rather idiotic to me. How is a driver supposed to build 1s of a gap in the small chicane that is T8/9? SUrely overtaking in zone 1 would mean you'd get overtaken in zone 2 no?

Not really idiotic, if overtaking in zone 1 is such an issue then a clever driver will just use zone 1 to get right up to the gearbox of the car in front, and make the pass at the end of zone 2.

And it would be absolutely idiotic if overtaking was child's play in both zones

On the other hand, it would be absolutely idiotic if overtaking was totally impossible, like it usually is at this race.

Personally, I think they've got it dead right – I expect that the first one will really not be used for much passing, not because of drivers thinking strategically, but instead because it's where you're most likely to be rev limited. The second one is a margionally slower straight, and may provide some more passing.

Funny to see HRT playing with mediums instead of trying new softs
Evidently they want to be 7 seconds back again

I thought what you describe as abuse is common sense.

If you use zone 1 to get close then the zone 2 overtake will happen earlier, which means you have more of the zone 2 straight to pull ahead, and then the rest of the lap to try to get further ahead.

However, if you overtake on zone 1, the other car will be right on your tail into zone 2 and you'll have to defend, or be overtaken. Both cars end up wasting lap time.

That would be the logical approach, but we saw in Korea and India, that no matter how close you can get to the McLarens, it wasn't possible to pass them using DRS, so maybe the McLarens would take any opportunity to overtake in zone1, and than use their excellent traction to get away in the beginning of zone2.

Just rofling at Ferrari's explanation for Massa's troubles in P1... "He damaged the hard tyres, that's what caused the spin" "Oh by the way, he damaged the experimental softs during the spin"... What, he changed tyres mid way through the spin?
