IMO, all who did not cross the line in time should be penalized on the base of putting the sport into disrepute. The FIA clearly stated they'd give penalties for being unnecessarily slow and they actually applied those in F3. If they don't do the same here, they will lose a lot of credibility with the youngsters.
I'm sorry, but I can't disagree with this more, as you can't meet a time with a 2 car wide moving roadblock slowing you down.
Agreed, Danny Ric would be penalised for maintaining position under this idea.

On a more serious note; i agree with the non-penalty for Vettel. Those that have read the FIA report will see that they recognized the footage that Vettel was out of the track when looking at the contact patch, but that from other angles, it could well be that outmost part of the car (the wheels) might still be on or touching the line.
I don't understand how that is valid. When you have a CLEAR shot that shows the tyres are not touching the white line, then why see an angle that does NOT offer a better view? By this logic, we can just go to the left tyre's view and from that perspective the furthest point would be the front right tyre which would appear to completely cover the line as if he were completely in.

Furthermore let's not forget about refresh rates. The cameras as far as I know don't record greater than 60Hz, right? Which means it's possible even more important positioning of his car is missing which would show that he's even further out. It may have been captured by a camera capturing at 165Hz for example. But anyway. Lost cause.

Thirty-five pages and the race is yet to run. One good kerfuffle tomorrow and we will hit one hundred pages again for a race. :)

So what has the race to bring? I suppose Ferrari’s best shot is Vettel to jump Bottas at the start, than undercut Hamilton with an early stop and try to block hij again later.

Contact patch != not the entire width of the car.
Not for nothing, Rosberg's Championship is the only thing that lends credibility to Hamilton's recent success. Otherwise, he'd just be the guy who's had the best car. — bhall II

I have a feeling that vettel will feel huge pressure to get in front of bottas and might do something silly in the first chicane. I also suspect hamilton won't mind another leclerc win so long as he beats bottas and vettel so will play the long game.

It's maybe renaults only chance of reasonable points this year so they again will be under pressure.

Fascinating race I think.

And the best of it is that it was all polite. People disagree without it being reduced to a slanging match. :)

I think people get that. However it’s slightly shady and makes you wonder if it’s a Monza+Ferrari situation. Remembering that Hulkenberg was dragged in front of the Stewards whilst LeClerc wasn’t when they did exactly the same thing in Q3 when they left the track for no reason.

Kimi's excursion defo cost Lewis pole, he lifted through parabolica but is still level with Leclerc on exit, no tow over the line cost him as well.

I saw no view where he wasn't all four off.
You can see white to the right of both his right side tires and it makes no difference for how long.

Let us stay away from conspiracy theories, please. None of it here. Theories on hunches and on events that suited one team well are not going to fly.

Regarding the Vettel decision: I can understand and accept that. I would also have understood and accepted if they removed his time. That was a very difficult call as you can argue the wheel "shadowed" the white stripe. One thing to note is that this will make any similar situation in the future much more difficult to judge as they now will have to check if the tyre is hanging over the white line or not; whereas checking if any tyre makes contact with the white line is much easier.

Indeed. With regard to your first sentence they sometimes make it awfully hard to stay away from them. Hulkenberg being dragged in front of the stewards with LeClerc being ignored screams it TBH.

I can understand the vettel ruling, but the fia made a point they would be strict on track limits. In the end it turns out they weren’t

I am sure somebody will use this case in the future.
