McLaren showing some very good pace once again. They seem to be comfortably ahead of everyone in the midfield except Perez. They're almost on pace with the top 3 around here.

Whatever McLaren is doing is working well. =D>
Given that each of the big three had one car crashing or losing a lot of time we can hope that McLaren is slightly closer this weekend. Probably wishful thinking on my part but one can hope.

We have to consider also that Carlos wasn’t necessarily going for a Qualy setup, probably focused on his race setup since he will be starting from the back.

It seems that their long run pace wasn’t too bad either, which is encouraging.

Car looks quick in qually trim again, Lando ran wide on his attempt so didn't get a representative lap. Haas seems to have swapped places with Renault this weekend, such an odd swing in performance, yet McLaren consistent in that 4th best position. I'm slowly starting to really believe that they are indeed best of the rest.
Worth bearing in mind that Haas were excellent in Austria last season, qualifying 6th and 8th and coming home 4th & 5th in the race. Their car just seems to suit this track and the higher track temperatures (which peaked at almost 55 Celsius today!) should aid them in switching on their tyres in qualifying.

Another good Friday for McLaren; Sainz was within a couple of tenths of the Red Bulls in P1 (the only representative session due to the errors and cross winds in P2) and the race pace looked OK as well. Sainz said on Sky that due to the engine penalty he takes he has focussed his set up entirely on the race so was surprised at the qualifying pace compared to rivals.

I wouldn’t read too much into the times of either Practice session... Not only is FP1 rarely representative of the team’s pace (it’s mainly use for testing and developing)... FP2 times were also hindered by the Red Flags (on short runs).

The fact that Mercedes, who has being more than a second faster in each circuit compared to last year, was 0.8 seconds slower than their time in FP2 in ‘18 tells us that we probably haven’t seeing what the teams can actually do.

Long runs should give a better perspective of race pace and pecking order.

Apparently there are two schools of thought here, that running higher downforce due to the thinner air and hot track temperatures (Speed in corners as well as looking after the tyres) vs low downforce (Straight line speed in Race config). Due to DRS on three straights, running high downforce shouldn't compromise Qualy much, if it doesn't in fact help it due to a higher exit speed.

I look forward to seeing the Qualy setup, I'd hope that we run with a decent amount of downforce and try not to destroy the tyres too quickly on Sunday.

Getting rid of Alonso drama, and just focussing on the car is starting to pay off.

Don't underestimate the new people in place. Sedil did wonders for Porsche, and his influence is already appearing at McLaren. It helps that both him and McLaren are on the same page and integrating in the company has been easy.

best to hope for is not lose ground in constructors - the pace of Hass and RP probably too strong to expect Sainz to do anything about it. If the floor delivers, things could get spicy for Silverstone

It will definitely be interesting... I believe that Carlos can make some ground during the race, the long run pace seems to be decent.

I’m more concerned about first lap shenanigans... He will probably try to make as much ground as possible and hopefully doesn’t take any unnecessary risks.

This is probably one of the best tracks to take a penalty also, since you don’t have many sweeping corners before the DRS zones (which allows to be closer to the car in front... Unlike France for example).

Agreed... And James Key would also have started to play a role...

Looks like mclaren will try to get to q3 with mediums at this pace

Maybe with Sainz towing Norris. Looks doable. Team looks to be able to easily clear midfield with a few tenths.

Lando, as usual seems to have found his rhythm on Saturday.
Q: (Stefano Mancini – La Stampa) Kimi, will you help Vettel to win his championship this year?
Kimi Raikkonen: I can only drive one car, obviously.
