Energy store and Control Electronics change for Checo. No grid drop
Its this sort of thing that makes me expect a Max DNF.

Well, it might at least make it more difficult for him to defend/attack indeed by having him not being able to fully deplete/fast charge the ES to guard it. But on the other hand, if Perez didn't get a grid drop, but just an equal replacement, if there had been worry for Verstappen, you'd think they'd also replaced his ES too, wouldn't you? So sure, chance of bad luck a notch up, but it is unlikely he will have to do quali laps (well, unless Merc have a lot more pace?) in the race.

You can't just replace something because you think it might be broken! I'm not even sure how they can change it without getting a grid drop.

Each car is allowed 2 components per season hence no grid drop.
Edit: I realized you were talking about Verstappen's hypothetical scenario. Not sure if teams are allowed to change components without reason, but being the first race I'd assume there wouldn't be a grid penalty

So how did they do that for Perez then, if that would be the case?

Sure they might have to show cause to the FIA, but if they had to replace (probably for a same-spec. unit, and while still well within the usage limit, since they had so far only used the 1 counting ...) it with three of the Honda cars presumably that wouldn't be impossible in case there was a worry to do so for the fourth as well.

1. Regarding Merc`s car rear instability, it`s a case correlation issue between its simulation tools back at the factory and the results delivered on track (as Red Bull had last year) or they just underestimate the downforce loss for 2021?
2. How long it`ll take them to get their aero right?

I think it’s more of a tire issue than aero, but it is a bit of both.

Wow. Already a failure for RBR.

This will abort the start.

Something isn't kosher with that car oh, and it sounds like Honda has engine issues in general.

I wonder if this could all come down to faster but more fragile vs slower and more reliable for the season.
