You're going from cross wind to head wind, and can cause understeer on corner exit, or a loss of grip if you're not careful. Don't forget that the start straight is north/south with the last turn at the southern end.
It's the usual mind games. Like in war tactics you need to appear weaker than your opponent. If you win from the underdog position you undermine his mood.
