Apparently Fernando has said on Spanish TV that Aston's simulations put him on P9 for the race.

Simulations were right. Maybe the setup was too aggressive for a single lap, we'll see next race whether they sacrifice qualy for better race pace

Remember, simulations showed they'd finish nineth. It probably also showed with a large gap behind them. So likely ran long, gave up lap time, purposely looking for a safety car.
