From my perspective, there has not been enough thought from the FIA about the interaction of the side impact bars with gravel traps. The focus has been hard perpendicular surfaces.
My thoughts exactly. Had the gravel trap not been there, I imagine the crash would have been similar to:
Verstappen and grosjean at Monaco
Massa and Perez at Canada
Perez at Monaco 2011
It still would have been high speed, but no barrel rolls
