From my perspective, there has not been enough thought from the FIA about the interaction of the side impact bars with gravel traps. The focus has been hard perpendicular surfaces.
Actually the FIA does focus on side impacts with gravel traps, which is exactly why they're trying to eliminate all gravel traps in favour of paved run-off areas.
