10k meaning 10 kilometres or 10,000 metres. I think that's what he means when he says 10k (metres) to the pub.

Maybe that's because NZ is so small? In Aus, 10k down the road is 10 kilometres.

That's not how I'm reading it. "10k (meters) to the pub" seems to be saying 10k = 10 meters, otherwise he'd have said "10k (kilometres) to the pub".

I think that but never bother these days. Too difficult explaining that a metre is a measurement and a meter is something that measures.
