I think Mclaren could be trying to brand themselves with the likes of Ferrari. Ever since Ferrari came into f1 they have run the red, although slightly different shades from time to time but virtually the same and people don't complain about that.

That is because red is an interesting color. There is a lot to work with - slightly different hues, luminances, etc. Grey is grey and that's it. If they had a sponsor with color that might make things better.

Might be difficult because of the Marlboro partnership etc etc.

But Bruce used to race in cars in Papaya Orange, so they should adopt it and make it into their brand colour. It makes things so much more recognisable.

Ferrari red is easily to see in a crowd, Lambos are regularly yellow or at least a bright in your face colour.

This black/grey/silver colour scheme is quite simply, boring. At least Mercedes have that lovely teal colour to work with as an accent.

i expected them to race in their LMP colors or something similar. grey-black-papayaorange. would have looked great, and recognisable.

they could even blend movistar in there.

the problem imho with this dark black livery is that it's hard finding a sponsor that's attracted because it's probably hard to find a way to be noted in that. Just look at how little ESSO, Mobil 1, KPMG, Sagefredo are visible. hardly.

That's simply not true. There are just as many possible variations of Grey than they are of Red.

Aren't the Grey Areas the most relevant in F1? ;)

No, there aren't as many variations of grey that would be different enough for people to notice without comparison. If it's actually grey, you can only change the luminance. For red, you can change the hue, saturation, and luminance. That's gives you many more possibilities.
