Roll Center Migration

Post

Hi,
I want to design a race car without antiroll bar because it is not very easy to install it in the car.
In order to reduce the roll angle I want to design a geometry with the roll center moving outside the corner when rolling. I think that it will reduce the roll angle.
Do you think that it is the case?
Thanks.

And why do you think this?

Why not just add more spring?
Grip is a four letter word. All opinions are my own and not those of current or previous employers.

because more spring will reduce the grip :(

What does an anti-roll bar do if it doesn't reduce grip? The bar literally links one wheel to the other taking load off one wheel and adding it to it's partner.

It seems to me that getting a roll centre outboard and controlling it's position in bump, roll, droop and all the combinations of the above going through a corner would be much harder to achieve than to find space for an ARB. And can you do all that and keep a sensible camber curve for the tyre?

Keep it simple.

I'm not sure about that. Throwing more spring on might increase the roll stiffness of the car making it seem like it loses grip, but I think in actuality that it takes less time for the tires to build up and reach there max cornering potential sooner. In my mind stiffer car takes less time to transmit forces laterally and longitudinally than a softer sprung car does.

I think you should rather try to get somehow a anti roll bar into the car than trying to change the suspension in some very strange way which possible can never completely eliminate the need of a ARB.
Sounds like you are going to take some really bad compromises.
Why can't you find a way to get a ARB into the car?

You might do better moving the roll center vertically, i.e. closer to the center of gravity, to reduce roll. That's what NASCAR does by adjusting the heigth of the Panhard bar. But if you eliminate roll the driver won't appreciate it. And adjustability of the roll resistance/height is often convenient.
