W-Duct Question.

Post

I have been sent this brilliant video explaining how the W-Duct works and I have to say it is fascinating. However I have no idea who is running it. At first I thought it was the new Mercedes system but the inlet is at the wrong end of the car.

So please if anyone knows could they tell me who has runs this and when was it was first ran :)

This video has been of much discussion, however there are many many issues regarding how that would actually work. You can probably find some discussion on the Mercedes and Ferrari car threads.

I reckon that Merc do not need and do not have the full functionality of three diffusors. It would be sufficient for a first version to just have the two stacked auto valves and use the airflow only on the straights to stall the front wing. The left and right side air flow could be simply vented out of the nose. This would already give superior balance to a stalled rear wing with DRS and F-duct.

Problem is this regulation:
3.7.6: Only a single section, which must be open, may be contained within any longitudinal vertical
cross section taken parallel to the car centre line forward of a point 150mm ahead of the front wheel centre line, less than 250mm from the car centre line and more than 125mm above the reference plane.

Any cameras or camera housings approved by the FIA in addition to a single inlet aperture for the purpose of driver cooling (such aperture having a maximum projected surface area of 1500mm2 and being situated forward of the section referred to in Article 15.4.3) will be exempt from the above.
Any inlet that far forward has to be for driver cooling only. The inlet would have to be at the front of the tub, pretty much where the Red Bull inlet is *adds fire to non-existent flames*. In reality, I doubt such a system exists. My bet is it'd be very unreliable.

Thanks guys, really insightful. There is a such a pool of knowledge and experiences on this forum that for a amateur engineering such as myself it is a invaluable resource :)

It seemed to me to be a very intuitive idea (ignoring rule 3.7.6) but even so obviously this system wont be seen on any F1 car for some time.
