Ferdinand Porsche Dies at 76

Ferdinand Alexander Porsche, the designer of the original version of the iconic 911 sportscar, died today in Salzburg, Austria. He was 76.

“As creator of the Porsche 911, he established a design culture that molds our sportscars still today,” Matthias Mueller, chief executive officer of Porsche AG, said in an e- mailed statement. “His philosophy of good design is for us a legacy that we will also honor in the future.”

I did not know the man, and it would be a lie to say that I feel sadness in it's genuine way, but 911 was one of the dreams from my youth, so hearing this news struck me as it brought back nostalgic memories.

There was always something mysterious about 911, they were never bluntly aggressive like Italian rivals. They just gave a hint that sleeping beetle-alike car on the parking-lot isn't a passenger car, but a at least exciting show-off Carrera, if not a Turbo monster.

My all-time favorite is 911 Turbo (type 930) from the 80s (black paint is a must).

Congratulations to his life's work. In 50 years they havn't deviated from his original design in any of their cars.

Well, since the 996 they did change from air to water cooling. But still, same shape, same rear mounted flat 6 engine. Still, my favorite version is the original 901, in RS spec.
I am not amazed by F1 cars in Monaco. I want to see them driving in the A8 highway: Variable radius corners, negative banking, and extreme narrowings that Tilke has never dreamed off. Oh, yes, and "beautiful" weather tops it all.

Sad day yesterday. The creator of Marshall Amps also passed.

I am sure there are many rockstars who have scads of both 911's and Marshall Amps.

That car did me a favour. It came out & proved popular (Porsche were worried about the change to 6 cylinders so hedged their bets by also bringing out the 912 = same body with the well established 4 cylinder engine.). Whgen the 911 was a success it made the 356s cheaper so I was able to afford one - a 356A soft top.

The original 911 was a really beautiful car (something you could not say about a 356 - it had character but not beauty).
