Crossfit anyone?

Post

Has anyone on here ever done Crossfit?

I've dabbled in it but I really want to take it on more formally and in a proper way. I've always led an active lifestyle so naturally this type of a workout really appeals to me, besides, it works really well with the type of "job" that I have.

I used to work out more often but I haven't been going on a regular basis for a long time now, so apart from the physical labor at work and trail running, I don't have much strength training in my life.

Sounds like a great program, at least based on my previous sport experience - football | soccer, basketball, kyokushin and swimming. Oh yes, and badminton. Recently I've been doing just some pushups, dumbbells and running in the morning, while pumping adrenaline fighting with the homeless dogs that want the most tasty meat from your a*$ ... We have a lot of them in Bulgaria.

What I also stumbled upon is this site, which according to some magazines is where Jason Statham trains, too - http://www.87eleven.net/epoch - ex NAVI seal is the leading figure there.

That reminds me, I also want to get into swimming.

And I have a similar program to yours; running, dumbells, pushups, pullups + work. But the thing is that I can't maintain a proper routine! I start and go for a while and then stop or slow down, which really doesn't let me see legitimate results.

But pull ups by themselves are amazing. During a summer internship during the summer of 2011 I used to do about 40 pull ups in the morning and another 40 at night, I was in amazing shape and the effects could be seen throughout the entire upper body.

10 reps of each; Normal "overhand", underhand, parellel, and wide grip is more than enough.

You might give Mark Sisson's Workout of the Week a try, just to keep things interesting. They're CrossFit based/compatible exercises. He doesn't publish them any more, but you can go through the archives here...

I took his running advice also. I cut my regular 4-6 mile trail run down to just once per week, and also slowed my pace by about 2-minutes per mile. I substituted 1-mile "sprints" and a whole lot of walking on the other days. I feel a lot better now and my performance has improved.

Like you, I need to get a weight routine into the mix, once or twice a week. It's tough keeping motivated on your own. We've got a couple of CrossFit gyms here in town - I'd love to join just to get a regular coach, but they're hella-expensive.

Thanks for that great link Pup! They have a great approach to fitness and life in general. Me gusta!

And yeah, running less often but smarter is much better. Recovery is more important than most people realize. This past summer I almost risked getting injured because I was running too often, the trails really take a toll on the joints.

And if you need a group for motiviation, try out meetup.com and check your local area for Crossfit or whatever type of group you're interested in.

I carry pretty decent amount of old injuries from my active sport days, especially on the legs, so yes, it does matter.

Back on the recovery - I made a humble experiment with myself by training pretty hard for 7 consecutive days - not only I lost total weight, but muscle mass simply shrunk. Some tough guys around the block told me that it usually takes 48 hours for the muscles to recover and resume normal services after such intensive exercise.
