2011/2012 Wheel weights

Post

Hello,

As part of a uni project i'm trying to work out the kinetic energy of an F1 car. To work out the total kinetic energy I need to know the kinetic energy of the vehicle, plus the kinetic energy of its rotataional parts, so wheels, drive shafts etc. That part of the formula is in bold. With j=moment of inertia and w= angular velocity.

KE= 1/2 m.v^2 + 1/2 j*w^2

It would obviously be next to impossible to find information on an F1 wheels moment of inertia, but I could roughly calculate it if i had the wheel including tyre weight.

So does anyone know how much and F1 front and rear wheel weighs? Please let me know, and tell me where you got the information from.

Thanks

Front and rear wheel are the same.

not really
The tyre mounting widths are 12” (304.8mm +/-0.5mm) front; 13.7” (348.0mm +/-0.5mm) rear.
while the diameter, and thereby the radius of gyration is the same front and rear (but different from dry to wet weather tyres)
the width and thereby the mass is not.

not the most recent figures but as a order of magnitude estimate:
Weight: 9kg for a front, 11kg for a rear

The weight of a Pirelli front tyre in kilograms.

I think, this accounts only for the tyre, therefore you will need to add the weight/mass for the rim to this figure

as for the rim weight/mass
according to this a front rim weights ~2.8 kg

So as an guesstimate let's say ~13kg front and ~16kg rear, should be close enough for what you try to do

Oops, you got me there. I forgot because they look very similar.

the KE of the engine parts, clutch and transmission etc will be bigger than that of the wheels etc
(when referred, in the lower gears)
according to writings on the GT40 and Can-Am MacLaren when they were new

Thanks gato azul, very helpfull.

There's lots of rotating parts to take into account, i'll just have to estimate each part.

Thanks for everyones help.
