Porsche 918 engine.

Post

Hi guys!

Porsche released a really nice video of the 918 assembly, here it is:

There are two engine parts I couldn't identify, can you help?

The first one appears at 2:35. If I had to guess I'd say oil pump, but totally not sure.

The second part appears right after the first one at 3:03. The "part" does not hold the crankshaft in place, they even measure the distance to the camshaft. Though I find it odd that they tighten one bolt without even slightly screwing the other one. Basically, no clue.

Thank you! I hope you enjoyed the video.

Yes 2:35 is the oil pump assembly. Very similar to formula 1.

3:03 that part must be some sort of oil spraying or oil scraping device - one of the two.

as already said, first part is the scavenge pump gallery.

the part at 3:03 is not an oil spray or oil scraping device, just a mounting device for the camshafts. It stays in the engine but has no function whatsoever after assembling.

Thanks for the answers guys!

Felix, I'm puzzled. I don't understand how can it be a mounting device if it's put after the camshaft is already in its location. Could you please clarify its function?

Thanks!

Look at the camshaft bridges, see those clunky aluminium blocks holding down the camshaft on it's lower bearing half? Obviously not real engine parts... The upper bearing half is in the cylinder head cover. So, lay camshafts in, put the bridges on, set position and timing, put those "mounting brackets" on, remove the aluminium blocks, those brackets hold camshafts in place and put on the cover.

Sounds so obvious now, I missed thoe upper part was the cylinder head. Thank you!! =D> =D>

I guess there's no way to remove the brackets once the cylinder head is in place... right? I wonder how much weight is it.

Yes, they stay in place and thus are designed for "lifetime". I suppose they might be around ~150 gr each..

So are you saying the only purpose is to temporarily hold down the camshaft during asswmbly?
