estimate absolute possible gains reg. downforce and time?

A place to discuss the characteristics of the cars in Formula One, both current as well as historical. Laptimes, driver worshipping and team chatter do not belong here.

estimate absolute possible gains reg. downforce and time?

Post

Is there any means or way to estimate or even calculate the maximal possible downforce level of a car design and lap time?

I mean for instance the amount of air weight and max speed through raw power is maybe in a way known, how many downforce points can a design or the max design have?

more and over how do you calc the lap time improvement of a new aero part?

thanks

Probably not in a meaningful way. You could in theory calculate a lap time based on all the power produced by the engine being converted into either forward force, or downforce (and then into turning or breaking), but this would produce an extremely low lap time - one that's not even close to achievable.

Here is a link to a description of how I would very roughly estimate the aerodynamic coefficients of your own car design:-

Ideally you would "simply" model the vehicle in very fine detail and do CFD analysis on it.....

and here is a link to a basic description of how you can determine the lap time that a vehicle will achieve around a specific race track (you will need a lot of data about the race track and the car itself in order to get a decent accuracy...)

If you're really interested in designing your own car, having its aero performance tested using CFD, and then finding out how fast it would be around a race track, take a look at the Khamsin Virtual Race Championship, of which I am involved on the side-lines.
