Wheel alignment help

Post

Hi

I'm fed up getting so much conflicting information on toe in/out in particular I thought I would come here. I'm doing a wee FF track car (Honda Integra Type R DC2)

The front track is 1480mm, and the rear track is 1475mm. I am using the string method with vernier caliper to measure.

I set the string 50mm from front wheel centre cap, and set the string 52.5mm from rear centre cap to allow for rear track being 5mm less overall. So now the string should be perfectly parallel with the body of the car.

Next I am measuring (on the front right wheel 1st) the difference between the front and back of the rim to the string. I am getting a result of 2mm and the wheel is toed out. So is this wheel 2mm toed out, or 1mm toed out?

Ie if the desired total toe is say 4mm thats 2mm per wheel. Is the definition of toe expressed in mm, the distance between the front and back of rim measured to the string, or is it the difference between the front the rim, and centre of wheel to the string. Ie half the front to rear measurement.

That's all I need to know but everywhere I read I get a different result. Check out my crude diagram.

Is that distance A the toe for that wheel or is it half of that in a nutshell?

If you have a parallel from the rim of the rear wheel, horizontal to the ground.
With the car tracked to run strait.
Measure from the parallel to the front of the front wheel rim.
Add or subtract the difference in track width between the front and rear axles.
The result is the toe in or out in mm.

If this FF car is RWD I suggest you set it up 2mm toe in on both sides equals 4mm toe in over all.
Toe out is primarily for FWD.
If the car over steers too much and is too 'pointy', I would wind off the toe in closer to parallel.

No doubt there will now be posts with more expert data that you should study.

Alternatively you could use an optical tracking gauge like we do.

Cheers. Yes it is front wheel drive. FF=Front engine/front wheel drive. I should have mentioned that, as it could have been Formula Ford or anything.

The factory spec is zero on front and 2mm total toe in on the rear.
Im going to try a mm or 2 toe out on front and maybe 1mm in on the rear to make it a bit more pointy.

Its a Honda Integra Type R. I am confused at the factory standard being zero toe as I thought most front wheel drives set static toe out,, even more so sport front wheel drives, so as when the wheels are driving it pulls them forward to a neutral position.

I prob will get an optical alignment done but I just want to experiment a bit by myself 1st to get settings I like.

Thanks for your help.
