Corner Position Detection

On their steering wheels, most drivers have a rotary switch to adjust the diff setting for entry and mid/exit of the corner.

How do they determine at which part of the corner the car is for a given moment?

I would think factors as:
  • Absolute steering angle
  • Increase/decrease of steering angle
  • Throttle position
  • Increase/decrease of speed
Using GPS for example would be way to slow and computationally intentensive.

Anyone, that knows the specifics?

the loads on the diff, although the are marked for the different parts of the corner, they are linked on the forces that you put in them (at least it used to be) so;

corner entry: negative torque (engine braking)
mid corner: no real force
corner exit: applying power trough the diff

for instance, at mid corner you want a very loose diff while at corner exit you want it to be locked.
