No stop pitstop

Post

To make these even faster, the cars could roll through the box without stopping. Eliminate the fore & aft jackmen. Install riseable rollers or a conveyor belt in the center of the pit box, to catch the skid plank. The step planes on the floor of the car could provide lateral alignment to prevent the car sliding off the roller/belt. Line the tire removers and tire mounters sequentially. Car enters the box, rolls on the riser, 4 wheelnuts off, 4 tires off, 4 tires on, 4 wheelnuts on, car drops off riser, done. Return to racing.

why?

charm of the pitstop is that it can mess things up.

pitting is part of racing.

while also sending off 4 Hamilton players to make it more interesting"

And here I got my hopes up of talking about how the hard tyre should be designed to do the whole race distance at a decent pace and teams could be allowed to avoid pitting to use two compounds if they choose to start the race on the hard tyre.

If they fit ramps before the box and really get a move on they can change the wheels before it lands, then rolls off back onto track. Maybe give the crew skateboards to sit on

It is spectacular, if you check in slow motion, the gun is in while the wheels are still turning!!

RBR has new wheelnuts (much less wide) since the French GP. (With the aero update package introduced there) since they have set 2 world record pit stops.

100 years ago Andre Boillot used no stop refuelling in the Targa Florio
his riding mechanic fuelled the car (fuel then was in cans) as they drove along
this was banned thereafter

It is going to sound a stupid question (it probably is) but if they already had the cans onboard, what was the saving?
or did they stop for the cans?

They slopped fuel all over the place as they poured it into a funnel. As it was the exotic mixtures burned the drivers backs and is why they used a cape to keep it off of him. Can you imagine with the wind of a moving car blowing it all over?

the cans (drums) were at the pits - same as everyone else's
the riding mechanic grabbed the drum and the car then drove along with said mechanic pouring the fuel into the tank

Didn't Berger win a race in Mexico with no tire or fuel stops? I think that may be the last time it happened.

Yes, it was 1986 and it was the first ever win for Toleman. Over the years that team changed hands many times, but they've had lots of success and the winning started there.

Goodyear just got it wrong and their tires were getting chewed to shreds every few laps. The Pirellis went the whole distance no problem. Toleman/Berger was the fastest car on Pirellis, therefore they won. Even Prost, who was known for being gentle on tires, had to use something like 5 different sets of Goodyears in the race. :wtf:
