2020 Super Formula Lap Times

Post

Just wanted to draw some attention to Super Formula.

Last time out at Suzuka pole position was 1'34.4, which would have been good enough for P10 at the 2014 Japanese Grand prix, and was faster than either McLaren Honda in 2015. Last year the F1 pole was 1'27.0, making the SF car just 7.4 seconds off of the F1 pace, despite having only 50-60% of the power. I think it's pretty impressive given the lap time deltas of the F2 and Indy cars.

Obviously I have a self-interest in the series, but I just wanted to share.
The final round of the SF season will take place at Fuji this weekend, I doubt we will see the F1 record from 2008 (1'18.4) broken, but based on testing time I think we could possibly see a sub 1'20 lap. The race is streamed for free with English commentary on youtube.

Impressive cornering performance, i wish there was an Indycar vs SF comparison, SF might be the second fastest formula out there.

SF cars have always been impressively quick. One of the first series to properly make use of generating load using the floor. I don't understand why it isn't a more popular series with drivers and fans

F2 would be about the same as Indycar on a road course.

This season in Bahrain qualy,

F1 1.27.2
F2 1.41.4 (+14.2)

2019 C.O.t.A qualy,

F1 1.32.0
Indycar 1.46.0 (+14.0)

I think the Super Formula would beat both easily though

Probably hard to watch being a Japanese series aimed at Japanese fans, time slots and transmission... that kind of thing.

1’19.9 at Fuji last weekend. That’s +1.5 versus the outright course record from F1 2008.

Regarding difficulty to watch, that has traditionally been the case, but it has gotten a lot better. Anyone interested should check out RedBull TV. Free with good English commentary.
