Thanks Ben, great pics! 8)

What's this though? Seems like something this huge should affect performance and can't be just some sensors for logging data?

does toyota have a new engine cover?
Simon: Nils? You can close in now. Nils?
John McClane: [on the guard's phone] Attention! Attention! Nils is dead! I repeat, Nils is dead, ----head. So's his pal, and those four guys from the East German All-Stars, your boys at the bank? They're gonna be a little late.
Simon: [on the phone] John... in the back of the truck you're driving, there's $13 billon dollars worth in gold bullion. I wonder would a deal be out of the question?
John McClane: [on the phone] Yeah, I got a deal for you. Come out from that rock you're hiding under, and I'll drive this truck up your ass.

I think that it is some sort of data logger, maybe a camera, or something?

Some of the other cars, like the McLaren and the Renault were sporting large data loggers above the airbox camera too, but nothing like that..

Yes they have a hump like the BMW Sauber :)

The williams pod is for Infra red Tyre cameras, it ewas run last year when Sam Michael told me Yes it does affect aero, but for tyre testing the impact is negligible

i wonder why people keep saying that... Its not BMW who came up with this "HUMP", its renault guys, from the very begining of 2004 ;)
here is a pic from a bracelona test day that year:

Interesting to see Ferrari running those wheel rim shields on the front too.

of course its for brake cooling  as it alwas was  Aerodynamics has nothing to do with it lol.

That said I find it stange they didn't try to introduce these at Canada if they really do improve brake cooling, or if they are just for aero, why not at Indy, with that long straight and the banked corner? Maybe they just didn't have time to test and fully evaluate the use of them at the front.

I'm sure someone was using these in front in either US or Canada. Forgot which one and I'm not sure about the team either, I just remember wondering how come they are using these up front too.

Might've been in one of the practice sessions too.

Well, for the rear wheel rims it improved aero as it channels the hot expelled air flow from the brakes to the rear wing increasing its efficiency.

Obviously there are no wings to channel the air around immediately behind the front wheels, so what benefit can you get out of using them? Because we've already proven they don't help braking performance. Is there some other aerodynamic benefit from them?

Ben, great pics by the way

Great pics!
Williams is running a different rear wing again. It's the third different wing this year. Maybe track-specific wings all year long?

it realy does look like thay are developing track-specific wings all year long
