I was wathcing some old season reviews from the mid 80's and couldn't stop thinking that the cars looked much bigger and bulkier than the cars from the early 90's. It looked like the drivers were sitting more upright in the cars. Is this right or is it just me?
Your right the drivers were sitting more upright and were also further forward, I dont recall when the rule came in to put the driver fett behind the front axle line, but before that there was only a rule to limit how far benhind the nose the drivers feet had to be (20cm before 1983, 50cm after).
The teams started to lean the driver back in the late eighties, with Brabham then McLaren startign the trend. Now the driver has a cockpit dimensioned by the FIA to ensure they are not leant back too much or squashed into a short cockpit.
