building an scca rally car

Post

hey guys, im toying with the idea of getting an older car, maybe a 1980'2 toyota mr2 or its equivalent, and fixing it up enough to be able to enter it in some scca rallies here in the US - ive got some friends who are into it too, and we have all the manufacturing capabilities we would need to be able to install a roll cage, new suspension, etc . . . . . i was wondering if any of you here had any experience or knowledge of what is necassary for building up a car and entering it, im just looking to compete in a lower class as i don't have much experience yet driving rally, and i don't have a budget that affords a car that will be competitive in one of the upper class. if anyone here has knowledge of building such a car, or things to think about, or places i could look to find information, i would really appreciate the input.

Bloody nightmare finding helpful sites unless you want to build a Lotus 7 style car or a sports car in general.I'm after any decent single seater sites because i want to build from scratch pretty much,so let me know if you come across any on your travels!!

http://www.locostbuilders.co.uk (good forum!)

http://www.grabercars.com

http://www.projectlmp.com (le mans style racer, looks excellent!)

http://www.allf1.info.com (search engine that searches 14 sites at once, might find it usefull)

Sorry can't be more help, good luck.

thanks for the sites, ill be looking at studying them soon . . . ill let you know if i find any site you would like! one thing i have found though, is that the website of the series you want too enter is pretty helpful . . . i live in california, US, and as such im entering a california rally series, and on there4 website i found a 40-something page pdf file that went through every step you need to know to enter the series and build a car - safty reg, how they organize a weekend, how to finance it, etc . . . so perhap if there is a series you are planning to enter there website will have recources like this as well. keep us posted on how your project is working out, im really interested in seeing how it evolves!

haha, hopefully this summer ill be able to work enough to buy some joy . . . money is tight right now, the old cliche of the poor college student is as true for me as any . . . but i have been doing some research. right now, it looks like my two main candidate cars that i will tranform are either an 86-89 toyota MR-2 SC, or an early 90s miata. what i would like to do is buy an old body with a crap engine for cheap, then get a new engine with very low miles and do a swap. then ill have a fresh engine, and the body ill be able to fix up as i install the roll cage, etc. also, since i will be stripping the interior anyway for weight purposes, if the upholstry happens to be a little messed up, it won't bother me too much
