Looking for experience...

Post

Hi All,
I am currently in Year 12 (VI Form) at my school and have just started looking for universities, however I have been told that I will be in a much better position if I find some form of work experience, particualy in the area that I would like to study. This area is Motorsport/Automotive Engineering.
I have looked on the internet for various types companies close to where I live (see below) but cannot seem to find anything.
I live in Brentwood, Essex (UK) and would like to work for a company related to Motorsport to gain experience in some way but I cannot find any companies close to me. I can only travel by public transport as I cannot drive, so I would like to keep it as close as possible. And I can only work weekends due to school/studying.
So does anyone know of/work for companies/schemes etc. that could help me gain experience?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Work experience is practically all the same at the undergrad level really. It's more important to them that you show that you made a commitment to a job and followed through.

In the end, college is really just making a commitment and following through regardless of whether the material interests you or not. Clearly, it's easier for you if your job/college major interests you but it's not of paramount importance to the university admissions department.

Bottom line: it'd be great if you found something in motorsport but if you end up working in a tea shoppe (or whatever they have on your side of the pond) it's not the end of the world and still worth listing on your CV/resume/application.

Azzat, See if you can find a toolmakers nearby, better if they do some of their own design work and ask to sweep up the swarf on a saturday morning (if they are working sat morning obviously).
Then you can lean on your broom (occasionally) and chat to the old boys in there and try and pick up a bit of knowledge to impress your tutors. Might be better to concentrate on driving lessons though.
