How much welding goes into a Formula 1 car?

Post

I was just curious do any of you guys know how much welding goes into a formula 1 car anymore? I know the majority is composites and exotic materials, but do they weld anything anymore? Sorry for such a random questions, welding is a hobby of mine and I just got to thinking about it. BTW I love this forum, best technical forum on the web.

Thanks :D

First of all :
The Exhaust system! LOTS of welding art and Master Fabrication...!this is definitevely not only a few hours of welding...per header..
but you are right it seems it is getting less and less welding work ...pity that..
saw some fabricated rocker arms some years ago which really really broke my heart
the closer you came the more fascinating the things looked ...real beauties..Ligier
manufacture if I remember correctly.

You’re right there’s very little welding in a modern F1 car. Aside from the exhaust, the only welded structures I can think of are the oil & water systems (radiators, pipework, tanks etc). just about everything else is moulded CFRP or machined metal. May be some on the fuel rail and Renaults engine to monocoque support struts
