Take old single hull tankers that are sea worthy but not safe enough to haul oil, clean and line the insides, and convert them to enoumous floating self contained fish farms and park them off the coast of countries that need food. That way we woulnt need the environmental catastrophe of the ship breakers in India as much.

What's the worst that could happen a fish spill in our oil rich oceans?

A great idea Giblet! But how in the world do you clean those things out well enough for that?

You know how we have multi-level parking structures? Well, how about multi-level farming grounds. Well, what is that? How about the light in the lower levels? You can set up mirrors on the side to reflect light through the open sides onto more mirrors on the "ceilings" of each level and the onto the plants.

Reducing farm land allows for increased forest land and thus the planet breathes better, I think.

Well, maybe it's worth a reading: http://www.xprize.org/

"The X PRIZE Foundation is an educational nonprofit prize institute whose mission is to create radical breakthroughs for the benefit of humanity... The Foundation has since expanded to offer new prizes for breakthroughs in medicine, healthcare, energy production and consumption, education and the automotive industry. In October of 2006, the X PRIZE Foundation announced the $10 million Archon X PRIZE for genomics, which will reward the first private effort to map 100 human genomes in 10 days ushering in a new era of personalized preventative medicine...

Google Lunar XPrize: Team Masten made their first attempt for Level One of the Northrop Grumman Lunar Lander Challenge today, making them just the third team to do so.

About the tankers, duh. Everybody knows how to clean and handle a tanker: no Oxiclean needed. "You haven't seen anything... the tanks ARE clean. Kowalski, how are the tanks going?"

Re: Designing something to BENEFIT HUMANITY

A friend sent me a link to a news article on a car accident the other day. The story of the baby girl who came off worst is without doubt the most upsetting thing I have ever seen.
I was thinking about how to stop something like that happening again and came up with an idea which I was thinking about posting in here.

the girls website is this http://www.cerysedwards.co.uk/ WARNING:it is very very very upsetting !!

Her neck injury seems similar to what the HANS device prevents, so my idea is to have a baby seat that works in the same way as that, although that would probably require the baby to wear a helmet, and I'm sure baby seat manufactures have looked into the problem themselves.

I was thinking that someone on here might have experience of working in the safety area and might have contacts with people who design and build safety devices and they might be able to develop a solution.

tbh I've only just googled 'baby seat neck injury' while making this post and it seems maybe she was in a forward facing seat when a rear facing one is safer:
from wikipedia - Rear-facing seats are deemed the safest, and in the US, children must remain in this position until at they are least 1 year of age AND at least 20 lb.

I'm sure baby seat design could be improved on massively though!

or how about something that would help that poor girl grow up.

sorry for the upsetting post.

stop using ethanol and give all that corn to 3rd world countries. Ethanol was a right step toward cleaner fuel, but it uses more fuel than it saves, and also corn prices have gone up and we're in a world wide reccession so its a double whammy. Maybe try the corn stalkes or grass or algae, we don't get our food from them(don't know about cows though since they eat both corn stalks and grass) and they regrow rapidly.

Why?

I know that all of what he said isn't right on but if you disagree you might as well explain why that is.

KERS... I am serious. Trains have been using it for years. It is just that silly 400 Kjoules/lap rule that needs to be scrapped. Uncap it and F1 can be a real benefit to mankind as well as giving manufacturers a return on their F1 investment that can be directly applied to road cars. It could be electronic or flywheel.

Degreaser, sand/media blast, paint with a marine 2 part epoxy, done.
