Safety harnesses and room for hands

Post

Hey all. Just a random question here. As we see various onboard shots we see different cars and their drivers holding their steering wheels through corners etc. But something that strikes me is how Red Bull's harness thing which they unclip to get out of the car (or sometimes not) (I'm talking of the part that was constantly coming loose on Webber's car in Japan 2009) seems to have just about enough room for the driver's knuckles to pass, while some other teams have more leeway allowing the driver perhaps a bit more comfort within the car. Is there any aero performance reason for this? Or am I just reading into it too deep?

Are you meaning the cockpit side padding? I think it is just that the chassis is quite narrow that they have to have these notches for the drivers knuckles.
