TFT vs LED

Post

Simple question.

Certain LG monitors have 72hrs bad pixel guarantee (I guess you can return it if bad pixel appears in 72 hours since you've bought it).On the other hand, LG LED monitors don't have such guarantee.

Does it mean that LED monitor can't develop bad pixels like common TFT?

They aren't actually LED monitors. They're all TFT monitors, but the ones labeled "LED" just use LEDs as backlight while non-LED models have CCFLs as the backlight. The working principle is otherwise the same, thus with the same potential problems.

Watchout, there are two type of LED. They are all LCD's. They all use Liquid Crystal.

As said, the backlight changes. There are two type of LED tv's.

One type are very thin, and have white leds (instead of CCFL) put all on the side of the screen. So there's really no difference rather than they're very thin.

On the other side there are LED tv's that have LEDS in the back. They have the advantage of having more dynamic contrast, since they can turn some of the LEDS off in parts where the screen is very dark. Thus giving higher contrast.

Bye! Hope it helps.

Thank you both for great explanation.

"LED" one is only 10% more expensive and has contrast of 5.000.000:1 while non-"LED" has 70.000:1

I'm also suspicious about that contrast ratio. Is it really that much greater on "LED" ones?

Contrast ratio is the ratio of the luminance of the lightest color, and the darkest one.

What you are really taking about is Dynamic Contrast.

If you can turn a part of the screen off, you can have a great contrast ratio. But there's a part of the movie they don't really tell you. There's not an LED per pixel, but groupos of LEDs. So if you have a group of LEDs off, and there's something bright near(more precisely, in) that group of LED you're not getting the real deal. Because something bright is almost shut off.

Wiki may explain it better than me:

*Instead of starting new topic, I'll post additional monitor-related question here.

Can full HD 1920x1080 monitors work on low-performance family PC with integrated graphics? I'm not asking about HD movie playback capabilities, that is absolutely NOT what it would be used for, I'm only interested if they can be used for everyday use like surfing, word, youtube etc. without chopping, swapping and choking.

I'd also like to know if 1920x1080 is their only resolution, or can it be adjusted/lowered to 1600x900?

Thanks in advance!

Manchild my friend, if you've got a HD monitor you can choose your preferable resolution and there's no obligation on using the full HD resolution. I use 1920*1080 resolution but I can use the lower resolutions as well. But to be honest I had problems when I chose the lower resolution like what you said 1600*900 and the picture had blur and wasn't sharp and vivid.
