Kubica looking forward to 'home' race at Monza
For Robert Kubica, in many respects the Italian Grand Prix represents a special event. As a teenager, he lived in Italy for several years. During this time made a name for himself as a racer. Soon he advanced to Formula One, and Monza became the venue of his first major success.
"For me personally, Monza is very special as I achieved my first podium there in 2006 - in only my third Formula One race," admits Kubica. "To mark this special point in my career I will have a slightly different helmet design at Monza."
From the age of 13, Robert, currently third in the World Championship, lived in Italy all alone - without his family and his friends from Krakow. The Italian kart manufacturer CRG had spotted his talent and offered him the chance of progressing in the sport. Many youngsters would have been discouraged by having to live on their own in a foreign country, learning a new language and understanding the culture adding massively to the challenge. Robert, however, opted for a different approach: he adopted Italy and Italy adopted him. And when he gets excited, the Italian in him becomes obvious: for it is then, his hands do the talking.
"As I grew up as a driver in Italy, I know a lot of people there and quite a lot of Italian fans will be cheering for me," says the 23-year-old. "At the same time, I also expect plenty of Polish fans to be there. I am really looking forward to the weekend."
