Alonso and Renault win all in China
World champion Fernando Alonso has won his 7th Grand Prix of the season and handed his team the Constructors' title. He is joined on the podium by Raikkonen and Ralf Schumacher who profited from a late drive through penalty for Fisico. Briatore almost let fall his trophy as he was full of joy for his blue team. Reliability has visibly won to the midseason performance of McLaren.
At the start, both Renaults were able to keep their first row positions while Montoya took fourth place from Button. Behind him however not the Ferrari of Michael Schumacher but David Coulthard. Schumacher collided with Albers in the installation lap after the German seemed to suddenly change his racing line. He might have not seen a faster driving Albers who on his behalf did not expect the change of direction by Schumacher. While the former champion started from the pitlane, Sato made a jumpstart and was punished few laps later by a drive through penalty.
The opening laps were a push for Alonso who quickly pulled away from his teammate who was closely followed by both McLaren cars. At a rate of one second per lap he showed why he is a world champion. Renault's engine E spec also proved very effective as both blue cars reached little more than 338 km/h. The race in front remained static for a while then as only Klien and Sato were able to do some overtaking.
With 33 laps to go, Juan Pablo Montoya drove over a loose part of curbstone and had to come in for a security tyre change. Immediately after, the safety car was put on the circuit and almost all drivers came in for their first pitstop. Montoya also came in a second time for his first refuelling. He thereby lost a vast amount of places while in the front both Renaults were still ahead of Raikkonen. While marshalls started to check out the curbstones for other problems, Michael Schumacher came out of a corner too quickly and planted his car in the gravel trap. Immediately the end of his race.
A lap later when the safety car left, Kimi Raikkonen faced another stint of laps behind Fisico but there was Karthikeyan who thought he had to solve that situation. The Indian crashed his Jordan hard with wreckage all over the road. The pitstops that followed were aimed for the cars to finish the GP without any further refuelling. Alonso came out ahead of Ralf Schumacher, Massa and Klien. The latter three did not stop a second time and were followed by Raikkonen and Fisichella. Indeed now in reverse order as Fisico was held up a tiny bit because of Alonso stopping just in front of him.
With 23 laps to go all debris was cleared and the race relaunched. Alonso again departed extremely well while Raikkonen did not get past Klien. ew moments later yet another moved race of Sato was ended as he seemed to have lost some gear as he slowly drove to the pitlane.
Barrichello started to suffer fom his tyres quickly as his bridgestones were completely worn out. Webber kept the pressure high and as a result Barrichello few laps later missed his braking at the end of the long back straight. This allowed both Webber and Button to pass the Brazilian while one lap later also Coulthard was able to get passed him. Barrichello was unable to brake late and came in for a tyre change one lap later.
When everybody in between Alonso and Raikkonen had pitted, Alonso again set a fastest lap knocking away Kimi's chances of a win at that time. The Finn on his turn set a fastest lap in lap 49 in an attempt to challenge Alonso until the flag. He was however around 12 seconds behind with only 7 laps to go. Fisichella got handed a drive through penalty a lap later as he was deemed to have held up Raikkonen too much just before the second pitstop.
Almost at the end Albers' suffered a front left suspension or brake failure while Trulli also came into the pitlane one lap from the end.
Fernando Alonso has won his 7th Grand Prix of the season while Renault took the constructor's championship. The team finished the season on a high and are already looking forward to the next season.
