New diffusers ready to be introduced at China
Following the approval of the diffuser gang cars, many rival teams are already in the process of developing new diffusers for their cars. Renault and McLaren are even expected to run modified diffusers at China, while other teams are rushing developments.
Renault, one of the strongest defenders of "the spirit of the rules" have been working on an update for some time and are understood to have flown over an improved diffuser for the Chinese Grand Prix. Fernando Alonso has declared that the update will not make a huge leap just yet, but a quick an simple solution would do as well in the meantime.
After all, the double decker diffusers (DDD) provide 14% additional downforce - a figure found at Renault after testing a simple model, and even with a basic update the car could gain several tenths per lap. The French team also brought a rear suspension update in an attempt to resolve their lack of rear traction.
McLaren on the other hand will also have an update. Apart from some smaller updates, the team already ran a pre-version of a double deck diffuser at Sepang, albeit that the upper channel was closed. Now with the ruling positive, the team will uncover the upper opening to fully enable the new diffuser.
Red Bull meanwhile are pulling extra long hours at the factory under the helm of Adrian Newey. The team's technical director will not be in China but has decided that a complete redesign of the car's rear end is much more important. The team expects its updated car to be ready at Monaco, the 6th Grand Prix of the season.
