Hamilton shows new helmet for British GP
Lewis Hamilton today unveiled the specially designed crash helmet he will race in this week's Santander British Grand Prix. Emblazoned with the Union Flag to demonstrate his support for both his home country and the many home fans who will cheer him on at the Silverstone event, it is also the first time the 24-year-old Formula 1 world champion has altered the design of his famous yellow crash helmet for his home race since starting his grand prix career in 2007.
With the yellow surface of his helmet appearing to peel away to reveal a fluttering British flag beneath, Lewis said he had specially chosen the design to celebrate the massive support he receives from his fans when racing in his home grand prix.
Hamilton said: "I'm really proud to be a British driver in a British team racing in front of the British crowd. I wanted to choose a design that not only showed that I am a British sportsman but, more importantly, recognised all the support I get from the fans at Silverstone.
"Last year, I remember standing on the grid and just looking out at all the faces in the crowd and flags and banners, it was a really special moment. And in the closing laps, I could see the fans on the banking going crazy, waving flags and banners on every lap. Racing at Silverstone is special, the British fans are special and I'm really looking forward to seeing them again."
