Ecclestone responds to new F1-scandal
As both Renault and Nelson Piquet Jr. remain silent over the newly launched scandal in Formula One, Bernie Ecclestone was more than happy to give his opinion to the British newspaper. Earlier this week, it emerged that the FIA is investigating the results of the 2008 Singapore Grand Prix as new evidence was given that Renault would have deliberately let Piquet crash into the wall so that Alonso could take victory.
Ecclestone, who gave quotes to several British newspapers last night, said: "It is not good for the sport. It all seems very strange to me but I do not know the truth, I have no idea."
The new evidence was given to the FIA only weeks after Nelson Piquet Jr. was dropped by the Renault F1 Team. That is why it has been suggested that the young Brazilian would be the one that gave the new evidence which led to the investigation. If that is the case, Ecclestone warned Piquet that he could find himself in serious troubles by making such accusations.
The Formula One supremo said: "If it is true, then I would have thought Nelson was in just as much trouble. If I tell you to go and rob a bank and you get caught, you can't say, 'Bernie told me to'. But it could just be a rumour and Nelson is just pissed off that he has been fired. He is an angry young man."
If the new F1-saga would make it to a hearing of the World Motor Sport Council, Renault could decide, no matter the outcome, to immediately quit the sport as rumours that the manufacturer is considering this option are ongoing for months. If Renault would decide to pull out of Formula One, this could truly damage the sport that has been hit by scandals for months and that saw both Honda and BMW quit due to the global crisis.
