Compromises required
The 'Sepang International Circuit', that is the host of the upcoming Malaysian Grand Prix, will challenge the BMW Sauber F1.06 in many ways. Willy Rampf, Technical Director Chassis, explains what the BMW Sauber F1 Team needs to focus on particularly.
According to Willy Rampf, the modern race track that features a full throttle percentage of 57% asks for a compromise regarding the car's set-up. The German says: "Sepang is an interesting track with a good mix of slow corners that require optimum grip and fast sections demanding maximum stability. The two long straights allow an opportunity for overtaking, so you have to find the right compromise between sufficient downforce and an optimal top speed."
Due to a switch from V10 to V8 engines, the aerodynamics set-up of Formula One race cars has become more important, especially at demanding circuits such as Sepang. Rampf confirms: "Because of the decrease in engine performance, the aerodynamic aspect has grown in importance." That is why Robert Kubica, the BMW Sauber F1 Team test driver, will play an important role this year. The Pole conducts valuable tests on Friday in order to support the Grand Prix drivers Nick Heidfeld and Jacques Villeneuve in their set-up and tyre choice.
