Pirelli announces tyre selection for early summer races
Formula One's sole tyre manufacturer Pirelli has announced the tyre compounds it will bring to the trio of the Spanish, Austrian and British Grands Prix.
The Milan-based tyre supplier has made its announcement slightly later than it usually does with the Spanish Grand Prix set to take place just two weeks after this weekend's Montreal round.
While the early races saw a few bold tyre selections from Pirelli, drivers will use the 'usual' compounds across the trio of the Barcelona, Spielberg and Silverstone rounds.
In Spain, the field will have the three hardest compounds available with the C1 serving as the Hard, the C2 as the Medium and the C3 as the Soft rubber.
The field will head to Spielberg a week after the Barcelona round takes place. The three softest compounds (C3, C4 and C5) will be used at the Red Bull Ring which is not surprising given the relatively low degradation on the flowing Styrian track.
Two weeks after the Austrian Grand Prix, Formula One will move to Silverstone for the British Grand Prix. With the Silverstone track featuring several long-radius high-speed corners, Pirelli has elected to provide teams with the three hardest (C1, C2 and C3) compounds.
The three tyre selections mean that Pirelli’s choices are identical to last year’s.
No surprises for the compounds for Spain, Austria and UK. Pirelli’s choices are identical to last year’s: the three hardest compounds in the range (C1, C2, C3) have been chosen for Barcelona and Silverstone, while the softest (C3, C4, C5) will be used at the Red Bull Ring. #f1 pic.twitter.com/KPPDRqzVgK
