Horner blames understeer for subpar performance at the Hungaroring
Red Bull team boss Christian Horner insisted that his outfit lacked pace at the Hungarian Grand Prix was down to the understeery nature of the heavily-upgraded RB20.
The reigning world champion team was left frustrated after the Hungarian Grand Prix. The Austro-British squad equipped Max Verstappen's car with a host of significant aerodynamic changes, but he was still unable to beat the McLarens of Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri.
Red Bull team boss Christian Horner insisted that the RB20 carried too much understeer which heavily compromised the performance on the narrow, twisty layout of the Hungaroring.
“It didn’t work out for us [on Sunday]. We seemed to have understeer and then losing that position at the start and conceding back to Lando affected us.
"We tried giving an overlap to give Max the pace but to no avail. The middle sector, in parts of the race was where we were looking competitive but there is plenty for us to look at to try and see how we can improve and come back stronger next weekend."
On the other side of the garage, Sergio Perez was set to endure a tough afternoon after his mistake in qualifying. The Mexican touch the damp kerbs at Turn 7 which saw him lose control of his RB20 and crash into the barriers.
As a result of his incident on Saturday, he only started from P17 on the grid. However, clever strategy and a relatively good high-fuel performance helped Perez work his way up into seventh.
Expanding on Perez's race, Horner said: "Checo drove a good race today and his strategy, getting the undercut on George, worked well.
"He also showed good pace, made good overtakes and hopefully would have taken some good confidence from that for a strong performance in Spa," noted Horner.
