McLaren performs quickest tyre change in Austin
Despite having failed to leave Austin with a podium finish, McLaren proved the quickest in the pit lane at the United States Grand Prix, having performed the fastest tyre service with Lando Norris.
Last year saw McLaren set a pit stop world record, by changing tyres in a scarcely believable time of 1.80 seconds at the Qatar Grand Prix. This year, the papaya team has been slow to get going, but they picked up the pace at the Belgian Grand Prix.
Since the Spa F1 round back at the end of July, the Woking-based outfit registered the DHL Fastest Pit Stop in three of the six races and were second fastest in the other three.
McLaren's mechanics continued to impress at the USA Grand Prix, with Lando Norris’s car at a standstill for just 2.21 seconds during his one and only tire change in the race.
The flawless performance in the pits helped Norris to put his world championship rival Max Verstappen under pressure at the end of the race, though he was ultimately to lose third place to the Dutchman after a penalty. Nevertheless, the well-executed stops also played their part in extending McLaren’s 40-point lead over Red Bull in the Constructors’ World Championship.
Red Bull's completed the second-fastest stop (2.38s), followed by RB, Alpine, Ferrari and Haas. Williams and Mercedes are the only teams that have failed to complete a pit stop under three second.
The Grove-based outfit's quickest stop was a 3.06-second tyre service. After the early retirement of Lewis Hamilton, the Brackley-based squad completed only a single stop
Once more, @LandoNorris benefits from the DHL Fastest Pit Stop. Just as they did in Singapore, the @McLarenF1 mechanics deliver with efficiency. #USGP #F1 #DHLF1 pic.twitter.com/5nkwPO5JPP
