McLaren loses Norris' former number one mechanic to Aston Martin

Former McLaren mechanic Marc Cox has confirmed he has left the team after a 17-year spell to join {Aston Martin}’s Evolution programme as their new chief mechanic.

Cox spent a long spell at McLaren, having also worked as number one mechanic for Lando Norris. He left McLaren’s Formula 1 operation at the end of 2021 to become crew chief for their Extreme E team.

He has now confirmed via social media he has left McLaren and will make his move to Aston Martin as part of their evolution programme, running previous year’s cars at private tests and demo events.

Cox joined McLaren in 2008, taking on the role of number 2 mechanic. He stayed in this position for seven years earning a promotion to number 1 mechnanic in January 2015. Having also spent several seasons as Lando Norris’s number one mechanic, Cox left McLaren’s F1 operation at the end of 2021 to make the switch to the Woking-based company's Extreme E outfit.

Confirming the news of his departure from McLaren on social media, Cox wrote on X: “After 17 years with McLaren it’s time for my next chapter. It’s gone by so fast, I had a blast and met some amazing people along the way. I’ll miss you papaya family”.
