On the back of the tough race weekend last time out in China, seven-time F1 champion Lewis Hamilton has sent an emotional message to his mother and mother-in-law.

Having set the pace in the Shanghai F1 Sprint and secured his maiden victory with Ferrari in the 100km dash, Hamilton endured a challenging main qualifying session in which he only grabbed fifth place for the Chinese Grand Prix.

The Briton had been expected to build on his great tyre management from the sprint race, but he struggled in the 56-lap race, and was forced to perform a second pit stop while his rivals completed the race distance with a single stop. The seven-time F1 champion ended up sixth in his second race with the Maranello-based outfit.

However, Hamilton was facing a possible disqualification from the Chinese Grand Prix after his car was deemed to have excessive skid wear, the rearmost skid falling foul of the 9mm minimum mandated by the technical regulations. Following a short investigation, the stewards confirmed that the British driver has been disqualified from the Shanghai F1 race as the plank assembly of his car was found 4mm below the minimum thickness of 9mm.

On the eve of Mother's Day that fell on Sunday, 30th March, the seven-time F1 champion sent out an emotional message to his mother and his mother-in-law, praising them for their continuous support throughout his career.

"I want to celebrate these two beautiful women that have kept me going in life. I’m always in awe of mothers. Selfless, loving, devoting and nurturing. My mum would sit with me to study and even when I struggled, her patience gave me hope.

"My step mum always encouraged my creativity and was there for me on and off the track. When I raced in the rain, there would always be a warm fire and noodle soup back at the trailer.

"These are just a few of the million ways they’ve supported me I am forever grateful to them and to all the mothers out there. Please remember you are appreciated and loved. You are the light in dark times. Thank you for all you do, happy Mother’s Day."
